Earthquake-Ready Summerlin: A Local's Guide to the Great Nevada ShakeOut

Earthquake preparedness probably is not the first thing you think about when you picture a Summerlin sunset, but Nevada ranks third among U.S. states for earthquake activity, behind only Alaska and California. Last June, a magnitude 4.1 quake centered near Red Rock Canyon, barely 15 miles west of the valley, was felt across all of Summerlin with no damage reported, and a larger 5.7 in northern Nevada last December sent a long, slow roll through the valley. That is why the Great Nevada ShakeOut on Thursday, October 15 at 10:15 a.m. is the most useful minute you can spend this month: sixty seconds of practice that turns a scary unknown into a habit your family already knows.

Why Summerlin Sits Close to the Action

Nevada's activity comes from the same Basin and Range fault system that built the dramatic scenery Summerlin wakes up to every morning. The region is still stretching, and the ground occasionally reminds us. Geologists track an active fault network across and around the Las Vegas Valley, and the June 2025 Red Rock quake proved the point when it rolled through Downtown Summerlin, Summerlin South, and The Trails in seconds. No one wants to dwell on it, but honest awareness is exactly how you protect a home and a family you care about.

Drop, Cover, and Hold On: The One-Minute Drill

Here is how the drill works. At 10:15 a.m. on October 15, registered participants across the state practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On for about one minute: drop to your hands and knees before the shaking knocks you down, cover your head and neck under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on to it until the shaking stops. Registration is free at shakeout.org/nevada, takes about a minute, and gets you counted in Nevada's participation totals plus free planning guides for your home, school, or workplace. If 10:15 on a workday is impossible, hold your family's drill any time that day and still register.

The Home Checklist I Share With Clients

The checklist I pass along to buying and selling clients is short and practical. Secure tall bookcases, armoires, and televisions to wall studs with straps or brackets; a toppling TV is one of the most common home injuries in a quake. Add childproof latches to kitchen cabinets. Confirm your water heater is strapped and braced (most newer Summerlin construction includes this, and it is worth a five-minute check). Know where your gas shut-off valve is and keep a wrench nearby, but only shut it off if you smell or hear a gas leak. Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Then build a two-week kit: one gallon of water per person per day, non-perishable food, medications, a first-aid kit, a phone power bank, a little cash, and a waterproof bag with copies of passports, insurance policies, and title documents.

Make a Family Plan Before October 15

Finally, set a family plan before the drill: a meeting place away from the house, and one out-of-state contact everyone can text, because local lines jam in an emergency. Walk your kids through Drop, Cover, and Hold On at home so it feels familiar instead of frightening, and include your pets in the kit. The shaking itself usually lasts under a minute; the preparation lasts as long as you own the home.

“Preparedness is not about fear. It is about the quiet confidence of knowing exactly what your family would do. That is the same feeling I want every Summerlin homeowner to have, earthquake or not.”

October 15 is closer than it looks. Take the minute, run the drill, build the kit, and then go back to enjoying those dusk skies over the Spring Mountains. And if you are thinking about making Summerlin home, I would love to help you find a place worth protecting. Whether your search starts in The Paseos, The Trails, Summerlin South, or Downtown Summerlin, search homes in Summerlin on my portal, or send me a note and I will walk you through the villages that fit your life.
