Moving to Las Vegas? Here's What Nobody Tells You About Summerlin
Every week, I talk to people who are considering a move to Las Vegas. Some are drawn by the no-income-tax lifestyle. Others are relocating for work, or escaping high-cost states, or simply looking for a fresh start. And almost every one of them asks the same question: "What's it really like to live there?"
Here's what I tell them — the stuff that nobody puts in the relocation brochures:
The Heat Is Real — But So Is the Lifestyle
Yes, summers are hot. Triple-digit temperatures from June through September are the norm. But here's what people don't realize: you adapt. Pools become your best friend. Morning hikes beat afternoon ones. Restaurants and shops have excellent air conditioning and outdoor misting systems. And the other eight months of the year? Absolutely perfect. Mild winters, gorgeous spring and fall weather, and more sunshine than you know what to do with.
Summerlin Is Not "Vegas"
This is the biggest misconception I encounter. People hear "Las Vegas" and imagine the Strip, the nightlife, the chaos. Summerlin is a world away from that. It's a quiet, family-oriented, master-planned community with excellent schools, world-class parks, and a genuine neighborhood feel. When visitors come to see Summerlin for the first time, they're always surprised — it doesn't feel like Vegas at all.
Your Dollar Goes Further Here
Compared to California, the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, or most major metros, your money stretches significantly further in Summerlin. You can get a beautiful home with a yard, pool access, mountain views, and space to breathe — at a price that would barely buy a condo in many other desirable markets.
The Commute Is Manageable
Summerlin Parkway and the I-215 beltway make getting around the valley straightforward. Most Summerlin residents have 20-30 minute commutes to the Strip, the airport, or Henderson. The infrastructure is well-maintained, and traffic is significantly lighter than comparable cities.
Community Happens Naturally Here
Unlike some master-planned communities that feel sterile, Summerlin has an organic warmth to it. Neighbors talk. Kids play outside. Community events bring people together. It's the kind of place where you'll find yourself waving to people at the grocery store and knowing your barista's name.
Red Rock Canyon Changes Everything
I've seen it happen dozens of times — a relocating buyer visits Summerlin, drives past Red Rock Canyon, and suddenly the decision is made. Having a world-class natural conservation area as your backyard is not something you find in most communities. It's a daily reminder that you chose well.
“Moving to a new city is scary. I know because I've done it. But I also know that Summerlin makes the transition feel like coming home.”
